Young cricketers at Leeds Modernians Cricket Club are set to benefit from improved facilities and upgraded training equipment following sponsorship support from BPI, helping the volunteer-run club continue supporting the next generation of players within the local community.
The funding has been used to improve the club’s practice nets, alongside the purchase of new cricket balls and additional training equipment for its thriving junior section, which supports players from Under 9s through to Under 18s. The investment is expected to enhance training sessions and provide better facilities for young players developing through the club’s ranks.
Based in North Leeds, Leeds Modernians Cricket Club provides opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy the game, running three adult weekend sides alongside a midweek team. The club has long played an active role within the local community, offering a welcoming environment for players, families and supporters alike. Like many grassroots sports clubs across the UK, it relies heavily on volunteers, local fundraising efforts and the dedication of families and players to help cover ongoing costs and maintain facilities.
The sponsorship came about through Andy Stewart, a colleague at BPI who also volunteers at the club, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting the interests, charities and community initiatives connected to its employees.
Andy Stewart said: “For a volunteer-run club like ours, support like this really does mean a lot. Cricket clubs are about much more than sport, they give young people confidence, friendships and somewhere to belong. These improvements will make a real difference to how our junior teams train and develop, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support.”
BPI, which works with businesses to responsibly sell and recycle unwanted equipment and assets, regularly supports local causes and community projects as part of its wider approach to community engagement and sustainability.
David Boulton, Managing Director of BPI, said: “We know how important clubs like Leeds Modernians are to local communities. They rely on volunteers giving up their time to create opportunities for young people, and we’re proud to support something that means so much to one of our colleagues. By backing Andy’s involvement with the club, we hope to help more young players enjoy cricket and develop both on and off the pitch.”
